Overcoming the Shock of Foreign Cultures through Cross-Cultural Understanding
Mustakim, Mustakim
Jabri, Umiyati
This paper seeks to slightly explore the issue of cross-cultural understanding that might be beneficial for lecturers of the Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang who have won further study scholarships abroad as well as lecturers who are planning to continue their studies abroad. Understanding different cultures are extremely fundamental as a result of the absence of information culture assumes a job in the utilization of improper correspondence language. Elements of contrasts in an individual's way of life can likewise make individuals look prejudiced toward individuals with various societies. As a lecturer who will be assigned to study abroad, it is very important to "interpret" the behavior, attitudes, and communication styles of people from various cultures. Sometimes hinder a person to be able to complete studies abroad is not because of limited intelligence but because of limited ability to understand and accept the new culture contained in the destination country to learn. We hope that this paper can provide a little inspiration for prospective scholarship recipients of foreign scholarships to prepare themselves as well as possible including non-academic factors.

Blended Learning Method to Optimize English Language Learning in Non-English Language Education Departments at Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang
Rahman, Musdalifah Ifah
Ismaya, Ismaya
Limited time to direct learning in class often made learning English less effective, especially for classes with various levels of English proficiency. In a higher education climate that demands active learning, English teachers often find it difficult to help students whose English competency was below average to catch up with their peers who had good competence. In general, this compulsory course was only held for one semester. In fact, the target of learning English on campus was generally quite high, namely to make students had sufficient English proficiency so that they could write academic papers in English as an international language. To help overcome these obstacles, this study offers the use of the blended language learning method, which was a learning method that complements direct learning with distant learning using the internet. Blended language learning was able to complement the lack of direct time in class with distance learning using internet media. This research was the result of writer's experience in applying this method for one academic year along with the results obtained from the application of the blended language learning method in the teaching process. With the application of the blended language learning method, the writer found that language learning at the college level could be more effective, efficient, and more student-centered even though the author still faces some obstacles in its application.

Challenges for students in translating sentences among Indonesian-English and Its Solutions
Ismail, Ismail
Mustakim, Mustakim
Hasan, Hasan
In eastern Indonesia, students face various difficulties in learning English. Especially English translation skills are their weak point. It is important to think about how our students' problems in using English have a certain foundation. This article investigates the problems of Indonesian English learners by analyzing some of the mistakes in their English-Indonesian translations in four aspects. This paper also offers some solutions to the problem. This study follows a descriptive and analytical method. This research was applied to students at the Faculty of Education, Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang, third year students. The student subjects consisted of 23 students studying English at the English Language Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah Enrekang University. The findings of this study emphasize that Indonesian students, especially eastern Indonesia, face problems in translation. Analysis of translation errors from the semantic category is more dominant on errors involving inappropriate word choices and the use of prepositions. In the syntactic errors’ category, the dominant error is the use of tenses. Whereas in pragmatic errors, the errors that often appear are excessive literal translations or ambiguous translations and also missing words or meanings or omission words. Students have insufficient background knowledge about how to translate English into Indonesian or vice versa. Based on these findings, the researcher recommends that translation should be considered when it is taught. Students should be given many topics to translate during their academic year and lecturers should use motivating methods to improve students' skills in translation.

Teachers’ communication style plays an important role in teaching and learning process because the students’ success in learning will be significantly influenced by styles that the teacher used to communicate with the students. Therefore, it is important to investigate the styles of communication used by teachers in the classroom. This research focused on exploring the communication styles used by male and female teachers in EFL classroom, the similarities and the differences between male and female teachers’ communication styles, and the aspects influencing their communication styles. This research was based on a study conducted at State University of Makassar, particularly in English Education Department, in September 2018. This study involved two male teachers and two female teachers of English Education Department. To collect data, the researcher recorded teaching process carried out by the four teachers in the classroom. Each teacher was recorded in two meetings, so eight recordings from the four teachers were obtained, transcribed, and analyzed by using discourse analysis approach. The communication styles used by teachers were analyzed based on the theory of communication style by Mikoluk (2013) and Lanz (2015). The findings showed that there were four communication styles used by male and female teachers in EFL classroom. They were assertive, aggressive, passive, and passive-aggressive styles. Male teachers were more dominant than the female teachers in the use of assertive, aggressive, and passive style, whereas female teachers were more dominant than the male teachers for passive-aggressive style. In addition, there were 3 aspects that influenced the teachers’ communication style. They were classroom atmosphere, teaching time, and subject taught. Findings of this study were advantageous to expand insights about communication style used by teachers in EFL classroom, including how it affected the teaching process and what aspects influence the communication style. Those insights then became consideration for EFL teachers to improve their teaching performance.
